Tom Bright has a PhD in Biological Oceanography and is retired from Texas A&M University, where for many years he held an appointment as Professor in the Department of Oceanography. He taught several courses and performed research on coral reef ecology. His and his students' research contributed significantly to designation of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary 100 miles offshore from Texas. Subsequently, he and his wife Cindy managed the Glover's Reef Research Station for the Wildlife Conservation Society in Belize. A field biologist at heart, his recreational interests include animal watching and nature photography. Hence, the creation of the picture Guides herein.

Tom and Cindy have managed campgrounds in US National Forests for over a decade. This has offered the opportunity to  encounter and photograph many of the plants and animals commonly seen at the various locations. His photos are the basis for the guides herein, with supplements from additional contributors where required. In addition to the campgrounds, he has produced similar guides for Marine Protected Areas he has been affiliated with in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
